Why only use LED screen on laptop and display but not OLED screen?

- Feb 29, 2020-

Reason 1: energy consumption

Laptop computers are sensitive to energy consumption, especially in the current trend of pursuing thin and light body, in order to ensure the battery life under the premise of the hardware energy consumption control is particularly critical. According to the comparison test of the same platform, under the premise that the IPS LED display screen and OLED display screen of the same model both reach the same picture level, the use of OLED screen will shorten the battery life by 10%-25% due to different load. Battery life was most affected when the Peacekeeper web surfing test program was running.

This is due to the fact that the background of most web pages is white, so the screen brightness is very high, and based on the current state of the art, the energy consumption of a fully luminous OLED display is higher than that of an LED display. Since an OLED display does not need a backlight, each pixel can glow independently. When all the pixels glow, the energy consumption of an OLED display is much higher. So battery life was least affected in scenarios that didn't require all the pixels to emit light, such as playing video tests.

There are also several laptops on the market that use OLED display panel technology, but they have one thing in common: 4K screens.

4K is still rare in laptops even today in 2020, which is a limitation in two ways. Windows is still unsatisfactory in terms of UI scaling optimization, and limited by the current performance of laptop graphics, there are not many 4K resolution application scenarios, even the mobile terminal of the top RTX2080 graphics card, can only barely guarantee the smooth operation of various games in the market under 4K resolution.

If you want a mainstream 2K or 1080P screen, computer manufacturer has to bear the high cost of mold opening and production line, and you also need some guarantee in terms of purchasing. Obviously, this is not a wise approach for the OLED display screen only targeted at the high-end market.

Reason 2: OLED display screen is expensive and has little advantage in laptop and display applications

Very few OLED used on screen is also due to the same cost problem although after years of development and technology of iteration, the current OLED display screen on productivity and cost have been improved greatly, but relative to the lower cost and has been compared to realize mass production of the LCD display screen, OLED terminal in the market price and supply the above clearly can't match. The current 27-inch display with a 2K resolution of 144Hz refresh rate costs less than 2,000 RMB, while a 27-inch OLED display may cost 7,000 to 8,000 RMB. Even the IPS professional-grade graphics display pursuing a 100%sRGB color gamut is less than 6,000 RMB. Obviously, this price is really hard for ordinary consumers to accept, and display manufacturers are not too keen to launch OLED displays.

Reason 3: OLED color restore accuracy performance is poor

With its advantages in contrast and wide color gamut, you might wonder why OLED displays are unavailable for the professional market in graphics or video surveillance. But the reality is that OLED displays the especially advantages, but on the accuracy of color reproduction is poorer, and the need to optimize to have accurate color reproduction ability of the product price is very high also, SONY PVM image monitor USES is 17 inches of OLED panel, cost up to 25000 RMB, obviously this kind of product only aimed at professional high-end market, and is not conducive to the OLED panel in the display market promotion.

Reason 4: OLED display is easy to burn screen

In addition to the price, OLED display panels won't be widely used on laptop and display screens, and there's a fatal flaw: the burn screen. Whether you're using Windows or MacOS, your desktop will display a taskbar or status bar, which can easily cause a burning screen to appear when you're stuck in a position for too long. In order to reduce the probability of burn-in, since the iPhone X with OLED screen screen adopted the method of combining software and hardware, the first is built in a special display chip, is used to enhance image quality and function of resistance to burn-in hardware level, at the iOS software level, gestures and the top status bar at the bottom of the every once in a while would light the location of the mobile display pixels, burning screen shows the location of the same picture happen for a long time, after the combination of hard and soft also can guarantee the iPhoneX OLED display screen to continuous working life is about 500 hours.
